Alvarenga called to shore, but with the weather, they could not be located and the radio was ruined by the rain. Leaving from Mexico for a weekend fishing trip, Alvarenga and his crewmate, Ezequiel Cordoba, became trapped in a storm and lost at sea. Jose Salvador Alvarenga survived for 438 days in the Pacific Ocean from November 2012 until January of 2014. The most I can do is recommend this book, since it is a true story of one of the craziest survival stories I have ever read about. How can I judge that? Jose Salvador Alvarenga did not survive for 438 days at sea for me to give my completely insignificant opinion on his story. They are people who decided to tell their story. Autobiographies though, are written by the person who experienced an event that was interesting enough to write an entire book about it. Who am I to rate someone’s life experiences? How am I suppose to read a book about a man who survived 14 months alone at sea, and rate it from 1-5 stars? Do you base it on the story? 5 stars for being alive? Do you base it on the writing? In some cases, like this book, it was not physically written by him. I have a really hard time rating biographies. Everything will work out… don’t give up hope, remain calm.

After routing Maxentius’ forces in northern Italy, Constantine approached Rome in October.Īccording to legend, on Oct. In the spring of 312, Constantine led his army toward Maxentius in in Rome. In 311, Maxentius declared war on Constantine, the greatest threat to his power. He defeated the Severus and Galerius, the Augustus of the East, in 306 and 307. Maxentius, the son of Maximian, was angered that he was passed over and declared himself Augustus. Though Constantine had the support of his father’s army, he allowed Severus, his father’s Caesar, to become Augustus. Constantius’ death in 306 sparked a conflict over who would succeed him. Constantine’s Vision and the Battle of the Milvian BridgeĬonstantine was the son of Constantius, who had served as a Caesar (a junior emperor) of the Western Roman Empire under Maximian before succeeding Maximian as Augustus (senior emperor) in 305. As emperor, Constantine served as a patron for the church, contributing to its rapid growth in the fourth century. 27, 312, on the eve of the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, Constantine had a vision assuring him of victory in the name of the Christian God. Thomas Paine’s pamphlet was first published anonymously, due to fears that its contents would be construed as treason it was simply signed, “by an Englishman”. “Common Sense,” published on January 10, 1776, was originally printed in the city of Philadelphia, but was soon reprinted across America and Great Britain, and translated into German and Danish. The book discusses real problems and situations, although the characters experience them within imaginary settings. It would be most rational to characterize the book’s genre as magic realism. Even if its end cannot be characterized as sad, it is at least ambiguous. That of Haroun and the Sea of Stories does not offer such a bonus. Also, romance is typically expected to offer the so-called happy ending. While it contains the elements of romantics, it likewise comprises those of an adventure story and fantasy. In the meantime, Haroun and the Sea of Stories are more than a classic romance. Thus, a romantic genre implies the dominance of a love story over other plotlines. Trying to determine the book’s genre, it would be unfair to claim that it is a romance. Rushdie’s background lets him create an inimitable blend of stylistic devices such as zeugmas and puns that have vivid implications for the culturally-related jokes. The author’s style is rather unconventional as well. Even though the novel is initially targeted at children audiences, the themes it elucidates are equally interesting to grown-ups. In his novel, Haroun and the Sea of Stories, Salman Rushdie provides a wonderful synthesis of the best literary elements of Indian and Western traditions.
